Effective October 1, 2009 American Airlines will lay off over 900 flight attendant positions across their fleet. Approximately 50% of the cuts will come out of the New York area. The cuts are necessary due to the decline of business travel and the loss of higher priced tickets the airline enjoys from business travelers compounded by American Airlines traffic dropping 10 percent in the first half of this of 2008 compared to 2009.
