Frequent Flyer and Travel Reward Points- Keeping an Eye on Them

Business Travel Tips

I recently received an email from Hilton Honors that told me I was in jeopardy of losing my over 140,000 points and stating “Remember, to keep your account active, you must earn HHonors points at least once every 12 months. Otherwise, your membership may be cancelled and all of your points forfeited.”

The email arrived in my in box at the end of the year last year and it just so happened that I had a 6 night stay booked at the Las Vegas Convention Hilton for March. I had to have activity within a 12 month period and I had been staying at Marriott hotels to take advantage of a bonus points promotion where you can earn up to 25,000 additional points if you stayed some many times in so many months after signing up for the bonus.

Just to make sure I called Hilton Honors on March 1st from the hotel and asked them to make sure my 140,000 remain in my account and in fact they noted my account as such. It does take about 48 hours for the account to be updated and I was not checking out on the March 6, 5 days after the deadline. The good news is that with most of the Frequent Flyer and rewards point program there are alternative ways to earn points with out actually staying in a Hotel or boarding a flight.  With Hilton I had a few options:

  • Stay at any of the 3,000-plus Hilton Family hotels worldwide
  • Earn points with one of our many partners
  • Sign up for a Hilton HHonors Platinum Credit Card from American Express®
  • Purchase a resort condo with Hilton Grand Vacations®
  • Purchase HHonors points online
  • Shop at our online Earnings Mall, featuring thousands of premium items

Ok, so Purchasing a resort condo at a Hilton Grand Vacations may be a bit of a stretch, signing up for a credit card is easy enough and a single purchase a year will keep the account active!  The president of terminaltraveler.com did the same thing with American Airlines to keep her Frequent Flyer account active and earning points.

One way to keep tabs on your accounts can be found here www.mileagemanager.com/tt.php sign up, add all your frequent flyer and reward points account number for airline and hotels and our Mileage Manager will aggregate all the points from all you accounts with one click.
