How to Beat Jet Lag
An ‘uncle’ of mine flew 747’s for American Airlines. He was an international pilot for years. I borrowed his flat in Juan Les-Pins in the south of France for a week or so back in the 80’s. Before going he gave me a few tips to avoid Jet Lag. They have worked for me ever since. Here they are:
- Jet Lag is 50% physical but 50% mental. Start by working on the 50% mental part as soon as you board the plane. Once you are seated and ready for take off, set your watch to the correct local time in the city or country you are jetting off to. Get mentally in that time zone. Tell yourself that is 6:00am in France or Italy or Norway, not 7:00pm in Los Angeles. Ever notice that people who say “I’m still on Los Angeles time” have the biggest problem with Jet Lag? That’s why!
- Don’t get drunk on the flight. Don’t. Get. Drunk. On. The. Flight. Yeah, you may pass out while on the flight, but you are going to wake up hung over and jet lagged! Have a drink, fine, but do not over indulge.
- Drink plenty of water while on the flight. Get up and stretch your legs. Look at your watch often and remember it is 6:00am in France!
- Once you arrive at your final destination, stay awake. Grab an espresso, go for a walk, and get acclimated. But stay awake until the evening. Have a nice meal and then go to sleep.
Got a tip to beat Jet Lag? Let’s hear it!
